Same-Day Invoices: A Simple Way to Get Paid Faster

In Jobber's 2026 survey of 1,050 home service owners, 48% were paid the same day and pros who accept online payments reported getting paid four times faster. Check your own gap, build a two-minute invoice, send it before you leave, and remind once, kindly.

Finishing the job is half of it. The other half is the invoice, and that one tends to ride around in the truck until Sunday night. Sending it the day you finish is a small habit that can change when the money lands.

The numbers, quickly

  • 48% of home service pros report same-day payment and 31% are paid within 1-3 days, per Jobber's 2026 Home Service Trends Report.
  • In that report, pros who accept online payments get paid four times faster than those who don't.
  • 28% named invoicing among the tasks that eat the most time each day, and 31% said admin or paperwork.

The limits: all three come from one survey of 1,050 U.S. home service owners in December 2025 (margin of error ±3 points at 90% confidence), across several trades. Owners reported their own numbers, and "faster" shows a link, not proof that online payment alone did it. Still, it's a handy yardstick for your own shop.

1. Check your own gap (15 minutes)

Look at your last ten jobs. For each, write down the day you finished, the day the invoice went out and the day the money arrived. Most owners find the longest wait sits between "done" and "sent." That's the part you control.

2. Build an invoice you can send in two minutes (30 minutes, once)

Make one template with your business name, a plain list of what you did, the total and how to pay. Add an online pay option, like a card or bank payment link, so the customer can pay from the driveway. Your invoicing app probably has one; if not, ask your bank about a card reader. Then test sending it from your phone.

3. Send it before you leave the driveway (5 minutes per job)

Text or email the invoice while you're still there, and tell the customer it's coming:

"Thanks, [Name]. Your invoice for [job] is on its way to your phone now. You can pay right from the link, and my number is on it if you have questions. [Your name], [Business Name]"

The work is fresh and any question is easy to answer on the spot.

4. Remind once, kindly (20 minutes to set up)

If it's still open after a few days, send one friendly note. Give it a week, send a second, then pick up the phone.

"Hi [Name], this is [Business Name]. Just a quick note that invoice [#] for [job] is still open. Here's the link again: [link]. Let me know if anything looks off."

"Hi [Name], following up on invoice [#]. Could you let me know when to expect payment? Happy to answer any questions. [Your name]"

Getting paid starts with the call that books the job. Text CALLS to (714) 871-4700 and we'll set up a free demo of Sarah, J316 Digital's AI receptionist, answering with your business name. No sales pitch, just the call.

Steps 1 through 3 cost nothing and need only your phone, whether or not you ever work with us. If you'd rather not send and chase invoices by hand, J316 Digital's office automations can send them and the reminders for you. And if getting found is the bigger problem, see websites.

Common questions

How fast do home service businesses get paid?

In Jobber's 2026 survey of 1,050 U.S. home service owners, 48% reported same-day payment and 31% were paid within 1-3 days of finishing a job. The numbers are self-reported and cover several trades.

Does accepting online payments really speed things up?

In the same Jobber survey, pros who accept online payments reported getting paid four times faster than those who don't. It's an owner-reported comparison, so it shows a link, not proof that online payment alone is the cause.

Can J316 Digital send my invoices for me?

Yes. J316 Digital's office automations can send invoices and payment reminders for you. That's separate from Sarah, our AI receptionist, who answers calls and messages, follows up, books calls and appointments, and tells you who called and what they needed.
